In 2007 he wins the Red Bull Rookies Cup.
In 2009 he debuts in the 125 class of the World Championship with the Aprilia RS 125 R of the WTR San Marino Team.
In 2010 he races for the same Team. His best result was a sixth place in Germany and he finished the season in 11th place with 77 points.
In 2011 he switches to the Avant-AirAsia-Ajo team with a Derbi. He achieves his first victory in the World Championship at the Japanese GP, five second places (Great Britain, Italy, Germany, Czech Republic and San Marino), four third places (Spain, Portugal, Austria and Australia) and four pole positions (Italy, San Marino, Japan and Australia) and finishes the season in 2nd place with 262 points.
In 2012 he moves to Moto2, signed by the JiR Team.
In 2013 he switches to the Came Iodaracing Project team. He obtained two third places (Italy and Valencian Community Motorcycle Grand Prix.
In 2014 he moved to the Air Asia Caterham Team, driving a Caterham Suter. He gets four third places (Catalunya, San Marino, Aragon and Valencian Community) and a pole position in Great Britain.
In 2015 he switched to the Ajo Motorsport Team riding a Kalex Moto2 and won the Moto2 championship.
In 2016 he remains in Moto2, in the same Team.
In Malaysia he won his second title in a row in the Moto2 class, becoming the first rider to win the championship twice in the category.
He also becomes the first French rider to win more than one championship in the MotoGP.
For the 2017 season he signs a one-year contract with the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team. He gets two second places (France and Valencian Community) and a third place in Malaysia. In Holland and Japan he obtains the pole position.
In 2018 he remains in the same Team. He obtains two second places (Argentina and Spain), a third place (in Malaysia as the year before) and two pole positions in Qatar and France.
For the 2019 season he signs a two-year contract with the official KTM Team.
He is signed starting from the Australian GP for the last three races of the world championship by the LCR Honda Team.
In 2020 he races with the Ducati Desmosedici of the Avintia Racing Team, he gets the third place at the Czech Republic GP in the race after starting from the pole position.
